To ensure safety and fairness, we have clear rules in line with international Swimrun standards.

*General traffic rules in force in public spaces. People should be aware that they are using pedestrian and bicycle paths and crossing roadways. Athletes are guests in the Twiske, a public nature reserve where the following house rules apply:

Competition Rules

1. Purpose and character

The BackYard Swimrun Amsterdam is an adventurous endurance race in which participants alternate swimming and running on a marked lap in the Twiske nature reserve. Participants repeatedly run the same course (the Backyard formula): each lap starts exactly one hour after the previous one.

- Lap length: approximately 5 km (swimming and running sections combined).
- Lap time: maximum 60 minutes.
- Start: a new round every 60 minutes.
- Elimination: those who do not complete a round within 60 minutes will drop out.
- End: once no participant finishes within the time or the maximum number of laps (10) is reached.
- The winner is the participant who completes both the most laps within the time limit as well as has the fastest average lap time.

- Solo: male/female.
- Team: men, women or mixed (2 people).
- Age: Elite (ages 16-39) and Masters (40+).
- Teams: total age under 80 or 80+.

Each participant must carry the following items:
- Wetsuit suitable for swimrun (if water temperature is < 18 degrees C, above that tri suit or equivalent allowed)
- Start number (loaner chip provided by the organization)
- Swim cap and wristband  (provided by the organization)
- Swimming goggles
- Trailrunning shoes suitable for water
- Whistle (required)

Allowed:
- Pull-buoy, cord (teams)
-  Handpaddles

Not permitted:

  • Viinnen
  • Inflatable flotation devices
  • Snorkels
  • Electronic aids with navigation.

1. Participants must be able to swim and get out of the water independently.
2. Providing assistance to other participants is mandatory.
3. Use of alcohol or drugs is prohibited.
4. Officials may exclude participants for unsafe behavior.
5. The organization may pause, shorten or cancel the race in case of dangerous conditions.

1. Each participant shall report to the start before each lap.
2. A lap counts as completed only when finishing within 60 minutes.
3. Late starters or finishers automatically drop out.

- There are drinking and aid stations at fixed points.
- Participants provide their own food and materials between rounds.
- Personal belongings can be left at the starting zone on a limited basis.

The organization may modify or cancel the event in case of extreme weather, water quality or safety hazards. In that case, no refund of entry fees will be made.

- Warning (minor infraction, unsportsmanlike conduct)
- Disqualification (safety or environmental violation, repeated unsportsmanlike conduct)
- Removal from the game for serious infractions

The decisions of the race committee are binding and not subject to challenge.

First aid teams and rescue services will be present. The organization may remove participants from the race if there are signs of exhaustion or hypothermia.

Participants consent to the use of photos and videos for promotional purposes by Twiske Swimrunners.

By participating in the BackYard Swimrun Amsterdam, the participant declares to know and respect these regulations and to agree to the General Terms and Conditions and the Privacy Policy (https://swimrun.amsterdam/privacybeleid/).
